4 Risks of weight loss surgery
Every surgery has side-effects and weight loss surgery is no exception.
Weight loss surgery has become quite common these days as they give rapid and long lasting results. However, like any other surgery, they too have many risks involved during or after the chosen procedure. Here are a few side effects and risks of a weight loss surgery.
1. Formation of gallstones – It has been noticed over years that about one out of 12 people develop gallstones roughly about 10 months after surgery. These are small stones made of cholesterol that form in the gallbladder and can get very painful if they grow larger.
2. Sagging of skin – Weight loss surgery removes just the excess fat in the body, but this can lead to sagging of skin or excess skin, which usually becomes prominent or visible in about 12 to 18 months after the surgery.
3. Intolerance to food – Food intolerance indicates that your body is unable to tolerate certain types of food after the surgery. This can include green salad or red meat and can cause symptoms such as vomiting or nausea.
4. Sudden death – Almost all surgeries are unsafe. Even a weight loss surgery can lead to sudden death, which could be triggered due to a drug reaction, internal bleeding, infection, cardiac arrest or stroke. Such risk factors can be high in patients who are over 45 years of age, have high blood pressure, have a BMI more than 50, are obese or those who have had a history of blood clots.
